The Cross River Government is taking swift action to contain a cholera outbreak in the Local Government Areas of Obubura and Biase, as disclosed by the Cross River Commissioner for Health, Dr. Henry Ayuk, in Calabar.
Dr. Ayuk confirmed the identification of one case in Obubura and two cases in Biase. In response, an Emergency Operation Centre has been activated, with the State Epidemiologist, Dr. Blessing Ekpenyong, appointed as the Incident Manager to coordinate the containment efforts.
He stated, “Response commodities, including drugs donated by the National Centre for Disease Control, are being put in place by the Surveillance Unit and Logistic Management Coordinating Unit of the state Ministry of Health and would be sent to the affected wards.”
Furthermore, Dr. Ayuk highlighted the proactive deployment of the Local Government Area’s Rapid Response Team to the affected wards for thorough case investigation and the creation of a line list of reported cases to effectively contain the spread of the disease.
Addressing the public, Dr. Ayuk emphasized the importance of strict adherence to preventive measures, stating, “The public is urged to adhere strictly to all measures against the disease by avoiding drinking water indiscriminately, eating unripe fruits, and consuming contaminated foods.”
