The Registrar of the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria, Dr. Tosan Erhabor, revealed on Sunday that a staggering 10,697 medical laboratory scientists have migrated from the country.
In response to this concerning trend, the Federal Ministry of Health is formulating a policy to address the issue.
Dr. Erhabor stated, “The total number of medical laboratory scientists that have migrated is 10,697,” emphasizing the urgency of a policy to regulate the migration of Nigerian health workers.
To alleviate the challenges contributing to brain drain, the government is reviewing the hazard allowance of health professionals and considering adjustments to the minimum wage and specific allowances.
Dr. Erhabor highlighted the importance of creating a safe and conducive work environment to curb the rapid departure of medical laboratory professionals.
In 2023 alone, over 4,504 medical laboratory, scientists left the country, driven by inadequate remuneration, career progression uncertainties, pursuit of further education abroad, skill enhancement, and professional advancement.
“Some are leaving as a result of poor remuneration and uncertainties in their career progression in teaching hospitals.
“Others are leaving in order to study abroad, acquire new skills, and enhance their professional status.
“Good numbers are also leaving because of the security situation in the country, poor infrastructure, and lack of modern equipment to work with.
“Above all the rising cost of living is making it practically impossible for an average medical laboratory scientist to provide basic care and quality education for their children,” he said.
Additionally, issues like the security situation, deficient infrastructure, lack of modern equipment, and the escalating cost of living influence their decisions.
According to him, the scientists’ preferred destinations are the United Kingdom, the United States and Canada.
