Liverpool wins Sheffield United 2-0 to keep title race alive
Liverpool secured a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, maintaining their pursuit of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
Despite a warm reception for former Blades manager Chris Wilder on his return, Liverpool’s superior quality ultimately shone through.
The first half saw few clear-cut chances, but the game turned on a controversial moment after the break.
Virgil van Dijk converted a Trent Alexander-Arnold corner with a side-footed volley, sparking protests from the Blades who argued he had fouled Anel Ahmedhodzic in the process.
The Reds doubled their lead in stoppage time through Dominik Szoboszlai, but this goal was also shrouded in controversy.
Darwin Nunez’s challenge on Jayden Bogle in the build-up went unpunished, leaving the Blades feeling aggrieved.
Despite the contentious calls, Liverpool’s victory keeps them firmly in the title race, moving them back within two points of Arsenal.
For Sheffield United, the loss leaves them rooted to the bottom of the table, but Wilder will be encouraged by their spirited performance against the league’s top contenders.
