The Nigeria Correctional Service, Enugu State Command, has successfully enrolled 1,137 inmates for the National Examination Council external exams over the past 12 years.
Mr. Nicholas Obiako, the Comptroller of Corrections in Enugu State, shared this information with journalists on Wednesday in Enugu.
Obiako highlighted the commitment of the state’s three correctional centers—Enugu, Nsukka, and Oji River—to educational pursuits and the formation of inmates.
He specifically noted the significant number of 124 inmates currently participating in the ongoing NECO external test at the Special Study Centre within the Enugu Custodial Centre.
Over the years, Enugu’s correctional facilities have achieved remarkable success in inmate education, with a focus on primary and secondary school classes, as well as high-quality adult education programs within the centers.
Obiako expressed pride in the positive outcomes, stating, “Most of those who will make their result in their chosen field of study will seek direct admission to the university through the National Open University of Nigeria that has a study center in Enugu Custodial Centre.”
