Edo man jailed 14 years over rape, assault
A Nigerian court has sentenced a man to 14 years in prison for rape, assault, and conspiracy.
The victim, a person with a disability, was also subjected to degrading and inhumane treatment by the perpetrator.
BraveHeart Initiative, a non-profit organization that supports survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, has praised the sentence and vowed to continue its work to ensure justice for victims of these crimes.
“We are grateful to the court for this strong sentence,” said BHI Executive Director Priscilla Usiobaifo. “This sends a clear message that violence against women and girls will not be tolerated.”
BHI provided support to the victim throughout the legal process, and Usiobaifo commended the victim’s courage in coming forward and seeking justice.
“The victim in this case showed incredible strength and resilience,” said Usiobaifo. “She spoke out against her attacker, and she helped to secure a conviction. We are so proud of her.“
BHI is a youth-led organization that works to promote sexual and reproductive health rights for young people and women in Nigeria. The organization provides a range of services, including legal aid, counseling, and education.
“We are committed to continuing our work to support survivors of violence and to prevent these crimes from happening in the first place,” said Usiobaifo. “We believe that everyone has the right to live a life free from violence.“
