Bayer Leverkusen extended their winning streak to eight matches, a club record, and claimed the top spot in the Bundesliga table with a commanding 3-0 victory over Werder Bremen on Saturday.
An own goal by Werder’s Olivier Deman, who deflected a Jonas Hofmann cross into his own net, gave Leverkusen the lead in the 22nd minute. The visitors further extended their advantage just before halftime when Jeremie Frimpong unleashed an unstoppable shot from the edge of the box.
Leverkusen maintained their dominance in the second half, and Alejandro Grimaldo sealed the victory with a clinical finish in the 76th minute after Werder surrendered possession in their own half. Grimaldo’s goal marked his fifth consecutive away game in the league, setting a new club record.
With their eighth consecutive win, Leverkusen climbed to the top of the Bundesliga standings with 34 points. Reigning champions Bayern Munich, who temporarily held the top spot after their 1-0 victory over Cologne on Friday, slipped to second place, two points behind Leverkusen.
