Some students of the University of Lagos are still unaware of whether or not they were successful in the hostel balloting exercise as the institution resumes academic activities today.

The affected students, on Sunday, complained that they are not sure of where to lay their heads, especially those who are not residents of Lagos.

However, the Dean of Students Affairs, Prof. Musa Obalola, explained that the management was fair in the handling of the process, but that there was no way to accommodate all 35,000 students in the 8,000 available bed spaces.

Those who are yet to get the result of the balloting probably have issues with their email addresses because we never delayed that. We gave out over 70 percent of the bed spaces through transparent balloting. Some students who have health challenges or who are visually impaired don’t have to go through that process,” he said

Obalola also noted that some students with health challenges or visual impairments were given priority in the balloting process. He added that students concentrated on some popular hostels, such as Moremi, leaving other hostels with empty bed spaces.

In a statement on Sunday, the DSA announced the resumption of academic activities. He also advised students who were successful in their hostel allocation bids to commence hostel registration from today.

The University of Lagos management warmly welcomes all students for the 2023/2024 academic session and wishes every student a very successful year. In line with the approved 2023/2024 academic calendar, lectures for the first semester will commence on Monday, October 30, 2023. All students are advised to complete their course registration within the approved timeline and attend their classes as scheduled

Students who were successful in their hostel allocation bids can commence hostel accommodation registration from Monday, October 30, 2023. Students who complete the hostel registration may move into the hostels from Saturday, November 3, 2023,” he said.

Obalola urged students to undertake their academic activities with diligence and keep safe throughout the year.
