Protests have broken out in Akwanga and other parts of Nasarawa State in response to the judgment of the Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in Lafia.

Supporters of the All Progressives Congress and those loyal to Governor Sule have taken to the streets to express their displeasure with what they view as an unjust ruling against the governor by the Tribunal.

The Tribunal’s ruling on October 2, 2023, declared that David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party was the rightful winner of the March 18 polls, effectively removing the incumbent Governor from office.

In response to the verdict, the APC and Governor Sule rejected the judgment and instructed their legal team to appeal the decision in the appellate court.

In solidarity with the Governor, some party stakeholders organized a march in Akwanga LG, carrying banners with inscriptions like “Akwanga people stand with the dissenting judgment,” among others.

Meanwhile, the Advocacy for Advancement of Peace and Harmony in Africa Initiative has criticized the tribunal’s decision.

They argue that the ruling focused primarily on technicalities rather than legal and ethical concerns and called on the appellate court to review the decision.

They also urged residents to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting the court’s decision, asserting that Governor Abdullahi Sule remains the Executive Governor of the State in accordance with the law.
