A 40-year-old carpenter, Sunday Agada, appeared before the Karu Grade I Area Court in Abuja on Monday, facing charges of allegedly defrauding his client of N400,000.
Agada has been charged by the police with criminal breach of trust, cheating, and criminal misappropriation.
However, the defendant entered a plea of not guilty to the charges.
The Prosecution Counsel, Mr. Ade Adeyanju, explained to the court that the complainant, Ochuba Njidea, from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission academy in Karu, Abuja, had entrusted Agada with N400,000 for a set of chairs.
Instead of fulfilling the agreed-upon work, Agada allegedly used the money for personal purposes, with the intent to deceive the client.
During the police investigation, Agada reportedly confessed to the crime.
The charges against Agada are in violation of sections 312, 322, and 309 of the Penal Code.
Judge Umar Mayana granted the defendant bail and ordered a bail bond of N400,000.
Furthermore, the judge specified that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction, and their addresses would be verified by court officers.
The case is scheduled for further hearing on October 11.
