The Independent National Electoral Commission has refuted media reports that it has pulled out of the appeal process in the Kano governorship election petition case.
The INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education committee, Sam Olumekun, said this in a statement on Saturday in Abuja.
He said that the letter that indicated that the commission had withdrawn from the case was unauthorized and written by the legal officer of its Kano State office. He said that the officer has been reprimanded.
He said: “We want to make it clear that the letter was not approved. It has been withdrawn and the officer punished.
“We urge the public to ignore the suggestion that the Commission has withdrawn from the case or even worse abandoned the appeal.
“We want to make it clear that when litigants join INEC in a case, the Commission has to respond accordingly.
“We have, therefore, told our lawyers to continue in line with the existing policy of the Commission. The policy has not changed.”
