UK gov offers Chevening scholarships to PWDs in Nigeria
The British High Commission in Nigeria has offered Chevening scholarships to Persons with Disabilities for the 2024/2025 academic year.
The Chevening Scholarship is a fully funded one-year master’s degree program for outstanding scholars with leadership potential. The scholarship covers tuition fees, living expenses, travel costs, and other expenses.
The inclusion of PWDs in the Chevening program is part of the UK government’s commitment to fairness and equal access to education for all.
“We are not giving PWDs only because of their disabilities but because they have the ability that many have overlooked due to their disability,” said Oluwafunmilayo Ladepo, Chevening Programme Officer in Nigeria.
“We have someone from the previous set who is a Journalist with Visual impairment who completed his Masters program and got an internship with BBC. This is because of his ability and intelligence and he will be back after his internship to contribute to the media.”
The Chevening Scholarship program has been in Nigeria since 1984 and has awarded scholarships to over 1,000 Nigerians.
In the 2023/2024 cycle, the UK government awarded Chevening scholarships to 44 Nigerians, including PWDs.
