The Lagos Governorship Election Petition Tribunal on Monday dismissed the petitions filed by the Labour Party and its candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Peoples Democratic Party and its candidate, AbdulAzeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor, challenging the victory of Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Obafemi Hamzat in the March 18 governorship election in Lagos State.
The tribunal, in a judgment read by Justice Mikail Abdullahi, first ruled on the preliminary objections filed by the parties.
On the objection that Rhodes-Vivour was not a proper party to the petition filed by Jandor, the tribunal held that Rhodes-Vivour, who lost the election to Sanwo-Olu, could not be joined as a respondent in Jandor’s petition.
The tribunal also agreed that the Labour Party ought not to have been made a respondent in Jandor’s petition.
On the merits of the petitions, the tribunal held that the petitioners failed to prove their allegations of irregularities and malpractices in the election. The tribunal also held that the petitioners failed to prove that the alleged irregularities and malpractices affected the outcome of the election.
The tribunal therefore dismissed the petitions and upheld the election of Sanwo-Olu and Hamzat as Governor and Deputy Governor of Lagos State, respectively.
