Ogun considers death penalty for cultists
Ogun State is set to introduce a strict new law that will punish anyone involved in cult activities with the death penalty.
Governor Dapo Abiodun announced this initiative during a meeting with Oba Babatunde Ajayi, the Paramount Ruler of Remoland, held at the Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu, Ogun.
Governor Abiodun expressed deep concern over the widespread destruction of lives and peace in Sagamu and its surroundings due to recent events.
He made it clear that the government would not stand idly by while troublemakers wreak havoc in any part of the state.
He sympathized with the law-abiding citizens of Sagamu and the Paramount Ruler, as well as those who had lost loved ones in the recent violence.
Governor Abiodun stated, “We will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that we bring any person directly, indirectly, or remotely responsible for these occurrences to book.”
The governor discussed the possibility of enacting the death penalty with the Attorney General, emphasizing the need for people to understand the severe consequences of their actions.
He also addressed the issue of landlords unknowingly renting properties to individuals involved in criminal activities, promising to take action against such properties.
Governor Abiodun further declared, “I am now pronouncing that we will no longer refer to these people as cultists or any other name. We are pronouncing them as murderers, and we will mete out punishments that are deserving to murderers.”
The recent surge in cult-related violence in Sagamu, resulting in the deaths of around 20 young people, prompted this strong response from the Ogun State government.
In response to the situation, Governor Abiodun emphasized that his administration was committed to the state’s development and would not allow anyone to hinder progress.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Alamutu Abiodun, also conducted an extensive patrol in the community to restore order, with the police spokesperson confirming that normalcy had returned to the area.
Those arrested during the violence will face prosecution.
