Cholera outbreak hits Ogun LG

The Ogun State Government has confirmed an outbreak of cholera in Ijebu North Local Government Area. 

The Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Health, Dr Tomi Coker, issued a statement on Sunday to alert the public.

There is an outbreak of cholera (Aarun òní gbá méjì) in the Ijebu North Local Government area of Ogun State.” Coker said

Dr Coker said that cholera is a disease that occurs during the rainy season and is linked to poor hygiene, stating the symptoms to include diarrhoea with or without vomiting, which can lead to dehydration and death if not treated promptly.

She urged the Ogun State residents to report any diarrhoea with or without vomiting to the nearest health facility and notify the Local Government Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer on 08069788449.

She also advised the people to practice good personal and environmental hygiene, such as washing their hands regularly, using clean water, boiling water before drinking, cooking food well, and avoiding open defecation.

She said that cholera is caused by bacteria that contaminate water or food with faeces. She warned the people to be careful of what they eat and drink to prevent the spread of the disease.
