AU security council meets over Gabon coup
The African Union’s Peace and Security Council announced that it will hold a meeting to discuss the situation in Gabon following the military coup that occurred earlier this week.
The meeting, which is being chaired by AU Commissioner for Political Affairs Bankole Adeoye of Nigeria and Burundi’s Willy Nyamitwe, the current holder of the council’s rotating chair, was announced in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. No further information was provided.

On Wednesday, rebel army officers announced that they had seized power following disputed elections in which President Ali Bongo Ondimba had been declared the victor.
The head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, strongly condemned the attempted coup in the oil-rich central African state and called on the Gabonese army and security forces to guarantee the physical integrity of Bongo, who the coup leaders said had been placed under house arrest.
