Ukraine: Coca-Cola, Pepsi shut operations in Russia
Soft drink giants, Coca-Cola and Pepsi, have announced the suspension of business operations in Russia over the country’s invasion of Ukraine.
The development is coming hours after WuzupNigeria reported that McDonald’s fast food temporarily closed its 850 restaurants in Russia.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Coca-Cola said, “Our hearts are with the people who are enduring unconscionable effects from these tragic events in Ukraine”.
PepsiCo also cited “the horrific events occurring in Ukraine” as the reason for the suspension of the sales of Pepsi-Cola, 7 Up and other brands, as well as capital investments and advertising in Russia.
According to CBS, PepsiCo noted that it would continue to sell dairy products, including milk, as well as baby food and formula.
“We will continue to monitor and assess the situation as circumstances evolve,” the statement added.
Starbucks also announced the suspension of its operations in Russia. “Our license partner has agreed to immediately pause store operations and will provide support to the nearly 2,000 partners in Russia who depend on Starbucks for their livelihood,” Kevin Johnson, the company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), said in a statement.
“We condemn the horrific attacks on Ukraine by Russia.”
More than 200 US and foreign companies have stopped operations in Russia since its invasion of Ukraine.
