The Taliban regime in Afghanistan shocked the world on Friday when it called for a peaceful solution to the violent conflict rocking Eastern Europe, amidst concerns over the lives of Afghans living in Ukraine.
The regime’s call is coming in the wake of fears from thousands of residents including over 4,000 Nigerian students trying to flee areas being overwhelmed by the foreign military presence.
A statement issued by the extreme religious zealots expressed concern over the possibility of civilian casualties – however, their fighters didn’t show the same regard for human life last year, when Taliban forces brutally regained control of Afghanistan via a bloody and terror-fuelled coup.
AFP reports that just months after overthrowing their own democracy, the Taliban is now trying its hand at foreign diplomacy.
Modelling itself as a ‘Middle Eastern Switzerland’, Afghan leaders have identified themselves as ‘neutrals’ in this conflict:
“The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan is closely monitoring the situation in Ukraine and expresses its concern over the real possibility of civilian casualties. We call for restraint by both parties, and all sides need to desist from taking positions that may intensify violence.”
“Afghanistan, in line with its foreign policy of neutrality, calls on both sides of the conflict to resolve the conflict through dialogue and peaceful means. We also call on all parties to safeguard the lives of Afghans in Ukraine.”
Russian airstrikes have devastated the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv overnight, as the Putin-led aggression continues in earnest.
