The season of harmattan is a period many Nigerians anticipate from November ending to mid-March.

It is characterised by a cool dry wind that blows from the northeast or east in the western Sahara.

Temperatures can easily be as low as 9 °C (48 °F) all day, but sometimes in the afternoon, the temperature can soar to as high as 30 °C (86 °F), while the relative humidity drops under 5%.

The wind usually carries large amounts of dust, which it can transport hundreds of miles out over the Atlantic Ocean.

The harmattan blows during the dry season, which occurs during the months with the lowest heat of the sun.

In this season the subtropical ridge of high pressure stays over the central Sahara and the low-pressure Intertropical Convergence Zone stays over the Gulf of Guinea.

The climate of Nigeria is usually characterized into two seasons – Wet and Dry. The wet season (summer) is normally from April to October while the dry season (winter) is from November to March.

WuzupNigeria brings you seven ways to survive the intense weather;

1. Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water more often.

2. Adjust outfits to protect your skin from the harsh weather.

3. Take vitamin C tablets on fruits to nourish your body system.

4. Moisturise your body with oilly cream to it from dryness.

5. Be careful with fires.

6. Avoid dusty areas.

7. Wear protective hairstyles.
