Chelsea beat Villareal 6-5 on penalties to win UEFA Super Cup
Chelsea defeated Villareal 6-5 on penalties to win the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday at Windsor Park in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
It was a game of two halves as the European champions took the lead through Hakim Ziyech’s 27th-minute goal, but Gerard Moreno’s equaliser gave the Europa League winners a fightback after a dominant second-half performance.
With both sides inseparable after 90 minutes, extra time was required to decide the first European trophy of the season and Kepa Arrizabalaga’s late introduction for Mendy proved vital for the Blues’ victory as the game was forced into shootouts.
Asenjo gave Villareal an advantage by saving Kai Harvetz’s poor opener for Chelsea as Moreno who scored the equaliser gave the Yellow Submarine the advantage after beating Kepa.
Azpilicueta netted to keep Chelsea in the shootout and Kepa cancelled Villareal’s advantage by saving Mandi’s kick after guessing the right way.
Marcos Alonso slipped but sent the keeper the wrong way to give The Blues a 2-1 advantage but Ecuador’s Estupinan calmly sent Kepa the wrong way to level it up at 2-2.
Mount restored the advantage just as Moi Gomez squeezed in his before eJorginho and Raba converted theirs to take it 4-4 after five attempts apiece.
Christian Pulisic and Juan Foyth kept the score at 5-5 before Antonio Rudiger gave Thomas Tuchel’s men the advantage after Chelsea’s seventh penalty.
But Raul Albiol missed the seventh kick for Villareal after a timed save from Kepa sealed the win for Chelsea.
