Liberia seeks Nigeria’s support on biometric voters registration
The Liberian government on Thursday pleaded with Nigeria to assist in the biometric registration of its voters.
Madam Davidetta Lansanah, the chairperson of the National Electoral Commission of Liberia, made the plea during a study tour of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja.
According to her, the visit to INEC was necessary to enhance the seamless adaptation of biometric technology in Liberia considering the high cost to acquire the technology.
She said, “We will be interested in hearing from you on what kind of assistance you may render to the commission as we move forward to expertise in the adaptation process in the voter registration process. We also congratulate you for the introduction of an online portal which buttresses physical voter registration in Nigeria.”
INEC Chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, assured the delegation of INEC’s support.
He said the commission would continue to strengthen the long-standing partnership with Liberia in the spirit of peer support.
Yakubu explained that Nigeria was increasingly moving away from the manual processes by deploying more technology for the transparency and credibility of the electoral process.
He recalled that in the last three years, the technical staff of INEC had worked with Liberian NEC on the register of voters twice.
The INEC chairman said the initial assistance facilitated the conclusion of the 2017 general election in Liberia.
