Tokyo 2020: Zambia to face Brazil, China in women’s football

Africa’s representative, Zambia, have been drawn against the likes of Brazil, China and the Netherlands in Group E of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic games.

The 28 teams qualified for the Olympic football tournaments (16 men and 12 women’s teams) were grouped into seven (from A-G) with the women’s group covering for G – F.

Zambia’s discovered their opponents after the official draw was conducted at the Home of FIFA in Zurich on Wednesday.

Group G in the women’s tournament features the two co-hosts of the next FIFA Women’s World Cup™, Australia and New Zealand.

In the same vein, Team USA has been presented with the chance for Olympic revenge over a Sweden side that eliminated them from Rio 2016 on penalties.

Japan will kick off the women’s finals against Canada, with Great Britain and Chile making up the section, while China PR, Brazil, Zambia and Netherlands comprise the other pool.

See the full draw for the women’s football competition at this year’s Tokyo Olympics:

Group E: Japan, Canada, Great Britain, Chile.

Group F: China PR, Brazil, Zambia, Netherlands.

Group G: Sweden, USA, Australia, New Zealand.

The tournament is scheduled to run from July 21-Aug. 6.

The group winners and runners-up plus the two best third-placed teams advance to the knockout stages.
