No fewer than nine out of the over 1,000 prisoners, who escaped during the attack on the Owerri Correctional Center in Imo State, have been arrested in neighbouring Ghana

WuzupNigeria reported that 1,884 were on the run after some unknown gunmen, suspected to be security operatives of the secessionist group known as the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), attacked the facility with explosives and assault weapons on the 5th of April 2021.

Although none of the assailants has been arrested, the government blamed IPOB’s security outfit known as Eastern Security Network – ESN for the attack.

However, security operatives of the Ghanian police on Monday said that the escaped inmates were apprehended in Ada within the Dangme East District of Ghana’s Greater Accra Region, according to the BBC.

The suspects reportedly entered the African country through illegal border routes.

Ada Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Francis Somian, said that they were tipped off that some foreigners were crossing the Volta River into Ada Foah.

Upon the tip-off, Somian added that the police moved on the suspects and caught them trying to board a commercial bus at the Clinic Junction Lorry Station, as they attempted to move into Accra.

The BBC added that the suspects were arrested with Ghana and Nigeria currency, as well as personal belongings, passports and ID cards.
