Chelsea hand Liverpool a record fifth home defeat to climb fourth
London club, Chelsea secured a 1-0 victory at Anfield to hand defending champions Liverpool their fifth consecutive home defeat of the season.
Liverpool suffered a fifth straight home defeat for the first time in the club’s 129-year history as the Reds failed to find the back of the net against the resurgent Blues who moved into fourth place on the Premier League table.
The Blues drew the first blood through Timo Werner in the first half but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR.
A controversial handball appeal from Liverpool didn’t stand after Roberto Firmino attempted square ball caught the hand of Ngolo Kante, leaving the home side furious.
However, Mason Mount’s lone goal powered Thomas Tuchels’ side into the Champions League zone for the first time since the departure of Frank Lampard.
Tuchel’s men are unbeaten in 10 games in all competitions since he replaced Lampard in January while Jurgen Klopp’s men are yet to secure a win at Anfield since before Christmas.
With 11 matches to go, Klopp’s team is languishing in seventh place, four points behind Chelsea after losing five of their last six league matches.
