Al-Shabab striker, Odion Jude Ighalo says he has a big decision to make on his possible return to the Super Eagles team after receiving an invitation from coach, Gernot Rohr.

The former Manchester United forward retired from the national team after the Eagles failed to clinch the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations trophy in Egypt.

He bowed out with five goals and one assist as the Super Eagles claimed bronze at the tournament after losing the semi-final to eventual winner, Algeria.

Ighalo’s goal scoring prowess is unquestionable as he produced seven goals to finish as top scorer at the 2019 Nations Cup qualifying stage.

But with Rohr needing a backup for injured Napoli star, Victor Osimhen, an unfinished business is likely to be on the cards for the 31-year-old goal poacher.

The former Shanghai Shenua star who has scored a total of 16 goals for Nigeria confirmed Rohr’s invitation in an interview with BBC Sport Africa.

“I have been approached by the coach, but I haven’t decided yet whether this is a path I want to follow again.

“We’ve been talking about it for a while and hopefully soon I will make that decision.”

“I need to decide because I have huge respect for my country and the coach, so it’s only fair to let people know where you stand,” he said.

Since Ighalo’s departure, Osimhen’s clinical strikes has proven to be vital for the Eagles with the Napoli forward poaching four goals at the 2021 Nations Cup qualifying round to emerge the overall top scorer

However, the same cannot be said of supporting strikers, Paul Onuachu and Kelechi Iheanacho form with a crucial qualifiers around the corner.

Ighalo, who recently moved to Saudi Pro League after his Old Trafford loan deal expired in January, has scored three goals and an assist for the White Lion in five appearances.

He will be looking to add to his tally tomorrow when Al-Shabab faces ninth placed Al-Qadisiyah in a bid to extend its lead beyond five points at the top of the table.

Meanwhile, Ahmed Musa’s inclusion remains dicey with Rohr under pressure to drop the Eagles’ captain from the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Lesotho and Benin Republic later this month.

Rohr was heavily criticised for inviting Musa who has remained clubless since quitting Saudi side Al Nassr in October 2020 for the qualifying games against Sierra Leone in Benin and Freetown respectively last November.

Rohr, in an interview with BBC Sport Africa, declined comment on the possibility of Musa’s inclusion in the squad to face Benin and Lesotho for next month’s qualifiers.

“It’s unfortunate it didn’t work out at West Brom but I believe Musa will find another club soon.

“He has the ambition to get back as quickly as he can to play football again at club level.

“Musa made a great impact for us in big matches like against Iceland in Russia, that is a reminder of the ability he has.

“I have no doubt he can discover his best form, the happiness and joy to play again. This will be good for us because we can get to see that impact in our squad,” he told BBC.
