A teenage boy, Anthony Borges, has received numerous accolades for his bravery while shielding his classmates to prevent gunman, Nikolas Cruz, from entering.
15-year-old Borges was reported to have held the classroom door shut to prevent the shooter from gaining entrance.
The teenager who was shot five times in the Florida school massacre is recovering in hospital following the sad incident at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
According to the GoFundMe page created for Borges, his family revealed the details of his bravery. The GoFundMe has raised more than $70,000 (£50,000) for the victim.
“He was shot multiple times (both legs were shot, left upper thigh bone shattered and one bullet went through his back),” wrote the page’s creator Sara Caputo.
“He has a long road of recovery ahead of him but he is alive and stable.”
Another witness Carlos Rodriguez explained to Good Morning America how his friend acted calmly during the frightening experience.
“None of us knew what to do, so he took the initiative to just save his other classmates,” he recalled.
The boy’s father, Royer Borges, said he received a phone call from the teenager who told him: “Dad, somebody shot me in the back and my leg, too.”
Mr Boges said his only request was that people pray for his son adding that he is an hero’
Broward County Sheriff Scott also said he was honoured to shake the boy’s hand when he visited him in hospital.
“Fortunately, he is recovering but has a long road ahead with more surgeries needed. Please join us in praying for the swift recovery of Anthony and all the other victims of this horrific criminal act.”
Cruz, a 19-year-old who had been expelled from the school, is facing 17 counts of murder.
He shot and killed 17 children at a high school in Florida.
It was the country’s worst school massacre since the horror at Sandy Hook six years ago that left 26 dead.
