Okonjo-Iweala remains positive despite US opposition to WTO DG bid
World Trade Organisation most preferred candidate for the post of Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo has maintained positivity despite opposition from the United States.
Recall that Key World Trade Organisation (WTO) ambassadors on Wednesday tapped Nigeria’s Okonjo-Iweala as the best pick to lead the organization.
However, she was opposed by the United State of America (USA), which said it supported South Korean Trade Minister Yoo Myung-hee instead.
Reacting to the development on her official Twitter page on Thursday, Okonjo-Iwealaexpressed happiness after becoming the most preferred candidate of the organisation’s top spot.
She maintained humility despite the large backing from key ambassadors adding that she remains positive ahead of the next step on Nov 9.
Happy for the success & continued progress of our @wto DG bid. Very humbled to be declared the candidate with the largest, broadest support among members & most likely to attract consensus. We move on to the next step on Nov 9, despite hiccups. We’re keeping the positivity going!
Okonjo-Iweala and Myung-hee survived the initial pool of eight candidates for the WTO’s top post had been whittled down to just two over two previous rounds of consultations to pave way for the first female head of the organisation.
However, should Okonjo-Iweala succeeds Roberto Azevedo, who stepped down as WTO director-general in August, she will not only become the first female but the first African to lead the world organisation.
Nigeria and the rest of the world await the final decision of the WTO’s 164 member states who still need to determine whether they will support her before their next General Council meeting on November 9.
