Lekki Shooting: Rihanna labels attack betrayal to citizens

Published

US singer, Rihanna has condemned the Lekki Toll Gate shooting of unarmed peaceful #EndSARS protesters by a number of security officials.

A number of persons have been reportedly killed while about 27 are receiving treatment in hospital at Lekki after security forces in military uniform fired at protesters on the ground.

Rihanna took to her official Twitter account to express shock and displeasure at the incident which occurred on Tuesday night, moments before the curfew imposed by the Lagos State Government was effective.

I can’t bear to see this torture and brutalization that is continuing to affect nations across our planet! It’s such a betrayal to the citizens, the very people put in place to protect are the ones we are most afraid of being murdered by! My heart is broken for Nigeria man!! It is unbearable to watch! I’m so proud of your strength and not letting up on the fight for what’s right! #ENDSARS

Recall that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Tuesday imposed a 24-hour curfew in the state after hoodlums under the pretence of #EndSARS protest caused mayhem across the state.

I, therefore, hereby impose a 24-hour curfew on all parts of the State as from 4pm today, 20th October, 2020. Nobody, except essential service providers and first responders, must be found on the streets.

Surprisingly, the governor moved up the curfew time from 4pm to 9pm, while protesters were already reporting killings and injuries after soldiers shot at them.

Sanwo-Olu has since commented on the incident after a visit to the victims currently receiving treatment at some hospitals around the area, blaming it on forces beyond his control.

The #EndSARA protests have remained peaceful for the major part of the past 12 days since it started as protesters called for an end to police brutality across the country.

Although the Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu announced the disbandment of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which has since been replaced by the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) unit, the protesters refused to end their peaceful demonstrations except the government meet their demands.
