#EndSARS: Nigerians in Australia take protest to High Commission
Nigerians in Australia are the latest to join the #EndSARS protest after staging a march to the Nigerian High Commission in Australia.
The group, alongside other Nigerian, home and abroad, are seeking an end to police brutality and extra-judicial killings in Nigeria.
According to one of the protesters, “Some of us here have lost brothers, we have lost cousins. Some of us are survivors. We are survivors of police brutality.”
“You go about in Nigeria; you can’t even go about your daily duties. Why would we be governed by people who are charlatans in power?
“Why would we be governed by people who do not apply rural decency? Why would we allow injustice to thrive on our street?” he questioned.
For the past 12 days, Nigerian has witnessed a number of rising protests across major city es in the country as protesters call on the government to end police brutality.
This has led to the and scrapping dismissal of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) which has been replaced with a new tactical unit – Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) by the Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Adamu.
Regardless of the disbandment of the rogue unit, Nigerians have refused to back down from the protests as more people troop to the streets due to lack of faith in the government’s decision.
Protesters believe that the introduction of SWAT is ill-timed and does not align with their demands for a reformation of the country’s policing system. [Channels TV]
