Man remanded for raping a mentally challenged

A man was on Thursday arraigned before the Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court sitting in Ile-Ife for allegedly robbing a farmer of 50 gallons of palm oil and other belongings, including goats and sacks of cocoa beans.

44-year-old Timothy Elugbindin also allegedly set the residence of the victim, one Fatai Adeyeni, ablaze.

The police prosecutor, Joseph Adebayo, said Elugbindin and others, who are currently at large, committed the offences on March 10, 2020, in Odemuyiwa village near Ifetedo.

He explained that Elugbindin, while armed with a gun, stole 50 gallons of palm oil, two bags of cocoa beans, three bags of palm kernel, goats and hospital equipment worth about N10m.

Adebayo added that the defendant also set ablaze Adeyeni’s house during the operation.

Owing to the nature of the crime, the plea of the defendant was not taken although Mr Samuel Obi announced appearance for him.

In his ruling, Magistrate Joseph Owolawi ordered that the defendant be remanded in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.

He adjourned the matter till June 24, 2020, for mention
