Widow who boiled stones as food for her children loses baby girl
The four-month-old baby of the Kenyan widow who was filmed cooking stones to make her children believe she was preparing food has died, according to local media.
According to Peninah Bahati Kitsao’s 24-year-old son, the baby girl, Mary Kaingo, who was his mother’s last child, died after being discharged from hospital where she was treated for persistent fever.
She was said to have been receiving treatment at Makadara Hospital before she died.
“She developed a fever and a few days later they took her to hospital after they noticed that there was spotting in her stool. It got worse and sadly, she did not make it,” a source stated.
The child’s death comes a week after Peninah Bahati Kitsao received aid to save her children from dying of hunger.
Ms Kitsao’s four-month-old baby, Mary Kaingu, died on Thursday morning after having a fever for three days.
The family immediately made arrangements to collect the body from Coast General Hospital, where the child was treated, for the burial.
The BBC had earlier reported that neighbours raised funds for Mrs Kitsaowho lives in the coastal city of Mombasa after her plight went public in April.
A local organisation also helped her to open a bank account because she is illiterate, the BBC report added.
Peninah Bahati Kitsao used to wash laundry locally but can’t work due to the restrictions caused by the deadly coronavirus.
Her husband was killed by a gang last year.
The BBC added that the government’s feeding programmed, part of measures to cushion the most vulnerable from the coronavirus crisis, had not gotten to her as of April 30.
