First English football VAR goal thrills Iheanacho
Leicester City forward, Kelechi Iheanacho, says he is delighted to have made history as the first player in English football to be awarded a goal through a Video Assistant Referee decision.
Iheanacho scored the first goal awarded by VAR in England in his side’s third-round replay against Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup in January 2018.
VAR overturned referee Jonathan Moss’ decision to have initially ruled out the Nigeria international’s goal after he was adjudged to have been offside.

When asked about the jersey he had archived in an interview on Leicester TV, the former Manchester City striker said, “It’s the Fleetwood game, the cup game – the first VAR goal in English football.
“I’m happy to be part of it and to be a Leicester player to achieve that. It’s a great moment for me.”
Again, the 23-year-old benefitted from the use of VAR technology after the referee, upon consulting with VAR, awarded a goal late into the game against Everton in the English Premier League. The Super Eagles forward admitted that was his best moment of the season.
“That should be my moment of the season, to be fair. I can’t describe how I felt that day, but it was absolutely outstanding that day,” he added.
“Everyone was happy and we enjoyed that moment, so it was a great moment for me, especially for the squad, for Leicester City.
“It was a great moment, so that should be a moment of the season.”
Iheanacho, who asked to be called Mr VAR, has contributed to 12 goals (eight goals, four assists) for the Foxes in 18 appearances in all competitions.
