The organised labour in Bayelsa State has called on the newly-inaugurated governor of the state, Mr Douye Diri, to pay workers the outstanding January salaries together with February salaries.
According to the organised labour, workers in the state-owned higher institutions, the Rural Development Authorities (RDAs), Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), pensioners and others were anxiously waiting for their pay.
In a statement in Yenagoa on Tuesday by the state chairmen of the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, John Ndiomu and Laye Julius, the labour centres said Diri should restore workers’ confidence in his administration by paying the salaries and pension.
Labour said,”We believe the payment of January outstanding salary and that of February will restore the confidence of workers in your administration.“
It further listed its expectations to include regular payment of salaries, payment of gratuity to pensioners, payment of promotion/minimum wage arrears, training and retraining of workers and resolving “issues in the Local Government Areas and higher institutions”.

The NLC and the TUC, however, congratulated Diri and his deputy, Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo on their “divine emergence” as governor and deputy governor of the state.
It said, “Workers are confident that you will use your wealth of experience to move the state to the “next level.” We trust you will work to improve workers’ wellbeing, improve education as well as infrastructure.
“We wish to assure you of the commitment of all the workers to the policies and programmes of your administration.”
