95m Nigerians yet to register for NIN, says NIMC
The National Identity Management Commission has announced that approximately 95 million Nigerians still need to register for the National Identification Number.
This revelation came from Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at the commission, over the weekend.
Adegoke stressed the importance of enrolling more citizens, stating, “As of today, over 105 million NIN have been issued to Nigerians and legal residents. We want to assure Nigerians that within the next one or two years, we will reach our target of enrolling all Nigerians.”
To meet its target of enrolling 200 million individuals by 2025, the NIMC needs an additional 95 million registrations. This goal aligns with recent population data from the National Population Commission (NPC), which reported a population of 223,804,632 in 2023, indicating a 2.41 per cent increase from the previous year.
The NIN serves as a unique identifier for each citizen and has become central to various government initiatives aimed at enhancing security, governance, and service delivery.
Adegoke emphasized the commission’s commitment to achieving universal enrollment in the NIN system by 2025, particularly under the leadership of Abisoye Coker, the director-general of NIMC. Coker’s recognition of the need for streamlining modification and enrollment processes led to the development of a self-service platform. This platform allows Nigerians, both locally and abroad, to make necessary modifications such as changing names, dates of birth, email addresses, and phone numbers remotely, using various devices including iOS and Android-based devices.
Adegoke highlighted the convenience of the self-service modification portal, marking a significant improvement from the past when applicants had to visit NIMC offices for data corrections.
The NIMC encourages Nigerians to take advantage of this innovative solution, ensuring a smoother and more accessible registration process for all.
