80% Lagos community women’s husbands jailed, stranded abroad, Lagosian alleges

A recent call to a Lagos-based radio station has sparked a heated debate after the caller alleged that 80% of the women living in Ago Palace Way, Lagos, have husbands who reside abroad, which he claims has led to widespread promiscuity in the area.

The anonymous caller, speaking on Nigeria Info FM on Wednesday, stated that many of these husbands are unable to return to Nigeria due to being imprisoned or having unresolved immigration issues.

“Let me tell you, 80% of women living in Ago Palace Way, their husbands live abroad and some are unable to come home because they are in jail or have paper issues,” the caller claimed. He went on to describe the situation as a breeding ground for infidelity, saying, “Their wives, 24/7 Okada piam piam piam every time.”

In a bold suggestion, he challenged the radio host to put up a notice offering bags of rice to women whose husbands live abroad, predicting that the response would overwhelm the location.

While some listeners were shocked by the allegations, the caller shifted the blame onto the husbands, criticizing those who marry and then leave for extended periods without returning. “I don’t blame the wives. Why would a man marry a woman and after six months or one year, travel abroad? What do you expect the wives to do—hug firewood? I support everything these women are doing 100%.”

He further emphasized his stance by sharing his own marital views: “When I wanted to marry, I told my wife that if you want to travel abroad and leave me, I will cheat on you, so don’t bother to marry me if you’re traveling.”

The caller suggested that men who expect their wives to stay faithful for years while they live abroad are naïve and partly responsible for the increasing rate of paternity fraud in Nigeria.

The radio discussion quickly made its way to social media, where users on X (formerly Twitter) voiced their opinions on the matter. A user, @SirShade, shared his personal experience: “I live in Ago Palace. He is right. Just last week, a friend called me and said she was going to send me a lady’s number because she’s lonely. She’s married but the husband has been away. I declined.”

Another user, @Augustine, added, “That’s 💯 true. Ago Palace, Satellite Town, Festac environ is a no-go for me. 70% of married women’s husbands live abroad. Sugar mummies everywhere.”

Other users echoed similar sentiments, with @TolinkPostnow stating, “Ago Palace Way, Okota, Isolo, Lagos… That caller is perfectly apt, 100% on point. It is well ooo.”

However, the discussion also attracted more critical views, with one user, @Gabriel, harshly commenting, “Any woman staying in Ago is a prostitute. Even those whose husbands are living with them. This has nothing to do with abroad. They set standards for themselves that they can’t afford, which pushes them into prostitution. Ago ladies and Festac are the same.”

The claims made on air and online have ignited a fresh wave of conversations about marital fidelity, the impact of long-distance relationships, and the perceived moral standards in certain Lagos communities.
