Veteran actor Pete Edochie who turned 70 on Tuesday has been credited as the author of many proverbs online.
Yet the veteran Nollywood star has said several times that he does not even have a social media account, so he could not have been the one posting all those stuffs.
He once said the saving grace for him was that many of those posts credited to him were written in bad English that would never come from him.
However, there are many things he has said that are worth remembering without having to fabricate other ones.
Below are seven outstanding quotes by Pete Edochie. All of them are verifiable.
“God forgives easily, so these officials do not take the oath serious whenever they hold the Bible to swear. But the smaller gods are not merciful like the Almighty God who created heaven and earth. They (public office holders) should swear with gods so that it will put fear in these corrupt leaders to distance themselves from corruption.”
2. On politics:
“I’m not a politician, and I am not the only actor in this country. Throughout the campaign during the last general election, I didn’t campaign for anybody, yet on the social media you see people using my name to express support for one candidate or the other.”
“I’ve been fond of this country and it dates back to 1957 when the Ghanaian team beat Nigerian team by seven goals to nil.”
4. About Ghanaian leader Jerry John Rawlings
“Everywhere I go, people of Ghanaian origin say I remind them of Rawlings, to the extent that my own daughters joined in the fray. I agree with people who saw we have the resemblance because I know how I look and seeing him here I have no doubt they are right. It appears we have a lot in common.”
5. About the numerous proverbs and quotes ascribed to him:
“It’s either they are talking about politics, state of the nation, ascribing series of proverbs to me or using my name to counsel people about marriage. Someone asked me how I had time to put plenty proverbs on Facebook. I told the person I wasn’t responsible for them and that I didn’t even have a Facebook account, and she couldn’t believe it.”
“Igbos are no longer proudly speaking their language, if you ask somebody a question in Igbo they will reply with English and English don’t even suit their mouth. If we keep running away from our language it will die.”
7. On Nollywood
One big problem we have in the industry is language. A lot of the newcomers in the industry speak very bad English.
