A 68-year-old man in Ibadan, Oyo State, was rescued on Sunday after falling into a deep well while trying to retrieve his phone.
The incident happened in the early hours of the morning at Mobolorunduro Mosque, located on Ajeigbe Street, Molefalafia, Oke-Ado, in the Ibadan South-West Local Government Area.
A resident, Ajadi Olaleye, told newsmen that the man was lucky to survive. “The firefighters were able to rescue him alive and handed him over to his family for proper treatment,” he said.
Confirming the incident, the Special Adviser to Governor Seyi Makinde on Fire Service Reform, Adebayo Akiinwande, said the fire service received a distress call at exactly 6:10 am on Sunday.
“The call reported that an elderly man had fallen into a well at Mobolorunduro Mosque, Oke-Ado,” Akiinwande said in a statement. “Our firefighters, led by ACFS Adedeji, rushed to the scene.”
He explained that the man fell into the well while trying to recover his phone without asking for help or using proper safety methods.
“The firemen quickly tied all safety knots, took all precautions, and rescued the man alive. He was then handed over to his family,” he added.
Akiinwande blamed the accident on ignorance. “The man did not understand the danger of going into a well without training. Such actions can easily lead to death,” he warned.
He advised the public to always call professionals in emergency cases and avoid taking risks that can endanger their lives.
Akiinwande also restated the Oyo State Government’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of all residents.
