At least 50 shops and 12 apartments have been saved from destruction in five fire incidents between Friday and Saturday, the Kwara State Fire Service has said.

The Head of Media and Publicity of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, made this known in a statement on Sunday, according to The PUNCH.

Adekunle revealed that the incidents were recorded in various parts of Ilorin, the state capital, and Ilofa, headquarters of the Oke-Ero Local Government Area of the state.

While some cases appeared to have been attended to on Friday, the publication quoted Adekunle as saying that the agency attended to three fire incidents within the Ilorin metropolis on Saturday, where 48 shops were saved from destruction at Ipata Oloje Market, while eight flats were saved in Agbo-Oba.

“In all the fire incidents, only the one at Agbo Oba was caused as a result of refuse burning. But the remaining two were caused by an electric power surge,” he added.

The director of the state fire service, Falade Olumuyiwa, advised residents to ensure they switch off their electrical appliances even before bedtime to prevent fire incidents.

Thereafter, Adekunle added that Olumuyiwa advised the public to stop careless refuse burning in their environment.
