The Senator representing Taraba South constituency of Taraba State, Emmanuel Bwacha has presented his points on why a comprehensive population census is needed in Nigeria currently.
Bwacha who is also the deputy Senate Minority leader gave the points on the floor of the Senate on Thursday.
He listed the points as follows.
1. It is scriptural
The Senator referred to the scriptural book of Numbers, saying that to know the exact population of people in a country is supported by God. “This goes to show that even God approves of this exercise,” he said.
2. The Twin Tower example
The Senator made reference to the September 11 bombing in the United States Of America, saying it was because the country knew its exact population that made it easy to get the number of casualty.
3. Boko Haram casualty
Nigeria would have been able to know the exact number of people affected and killed by the insurgents.
4. It helps in planning
It is a no brainer though that census is crucial to planning. But the Senator mentioned it as his last point for supporting a comprehensive census.
