A 27-year-old man was allegedly abducted at gunpoint and brutally assaulted by a group of men while returning home with three children in his camper vehicle in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district on Thursday evening, Indian police said.
The attackers allegedly broke his hands and legs and cut off his nose with a sharp-edged weapon before fleeing the scene after villagers began chasing them.
Sankra SHO Ran Singh Sodha confirmed the incident, saying it occurred around 7pm near the Rajgarh-Khelana border area.
“Rajgarh resident Jamal Khan, son of Farid Khan, was returning home from Bhainsda with three children when two vehicles followed him and forced him to stop.
The accused allegedly took him into their vehicle at gunpoint and abducted him,” the SHO said.
According to SHO Sodha, the accused allegedly took Jamal to an isolated location towards the Rajgarh-Khelana border, where they attacked him with sticks and sharp-edged weapons.
“The assault was severe. His hands and legs were broken and his nose was cut with a sharp-edged weapon,” he said.
The alleged attack came to light after villagers passing through the area heard cries for help. Suspecting that something was wrong, they followed the vehicles carrying the attackers.
Police said the suspects, apparently fearing that the villagers were closing in, allegedly abandoned Jamal in an injured condition by the roadside before escaping.
The villagers alerted the police and took the injured man to Sankra hospital, where he received preliminary treatment. Given the seriousness of his injuries, he was subsequently referred to Pokaran. Doctors at Pokaran later referred him to Jodhpur for further treatment.
SHO Sodha said a case had been registered against six to seven people from Jamal’s village, Rajgarh, based on his statement.
“The preliminary investigation suggests that the incident may be linked to an old rivalry. Police teams are conducting raids at possible locations to arrest the accused. Further investigation is underway,” he said.
