The Oyo State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has reported that 222 people lost their lives in road accidents across the state in 2024.

This was disclosed in the FRSC’s end-of-year report, signed by the Sector Commander, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, and released on Friday in Ibadan.

Alo noted that the 2024 fatalities marked a reduction compared to the 270 deaths recorded in 2023.

According to the report, Oyo State recorded 304 road crashes in 2024, significantly fewer than the 495 accidents in 2023.

The number of injured persons also decreased, with 779 people hurt in crashes in 2024 compared to 1,321 in 2023.

“In 2024, 1,795 people were involved in road crashes, compared to 2,935 in 2023. The number of crashed vehicles reduced to 412 in 2024, from 794 recorded in 2023,” Alo explained.

The sector commander attributed the decline in accidents and fatalities to the corps’ focused efforts on sensitization and enforcement throughout 2024.

“Our aggressive stakeholders’ sensitization programmes and enforcement exercises in 2024 contributed significantly to the reduction,” Alo said.

She highlighted the corps’ strategy of educating not only drivers but also passengers about their role in road safety.

“Initially, the focus was always on drivers, but now, we are telling passengers that they must also take responsibility. More lives are lost in an accident than just the driver’s,” she added.

Alo encouraged passengers to speak out when drivers drive recklessly, emphasizing the importance of collective responsibility.

“Passengers must not remain silent when drivers disobey traffic rules. Safety on the road is a joint responsibility,” she said.

She urged all road users, including drivers and commuters, to work together to prevent accidents and protect lives and property.
