A 22-year-old woman, Miss Odama Mary Agado, has reportedly died by suicide after allegedly finding her boyfriend with another woman in Enugu, the capital of Enugu State.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has left family and acquaintances in deep shock.
Mary, a hairstylist based in Enugu, was said to have ingested a poisonous substance suspected to be Sniper after confronting the emotional fallout of the discovery.
Originally from Woleche-Ipuole in Yahe Ward, Yala Local Government Area of Cross River State, the young woman was described by sources as industrious and doing well in her business. She had reportedly recently purchased a car and rented an apartment for her boyfriend.
According to a relative identified as Daniel, Mary visited the apartment last Friday and found another woman there. Distressed, she returned to her own residence and placed a call to her mother.
“She became very angry and left for her own apartment. There, she called her mother and told her what happened. She also said her mother should take whatever happened in good faith, that she wouldn’t live again,” Daniel said.
Daniel added that her mother was unable to call back due to a lack of airtime and did not alert neighbours until she received news that her daughter had consumed Sniper and had been rushed to a hospital, according to Vanguard.
Efforts to revive her were unsuccessful, and she was confirmed dead later that evening. Her body was transported to her hometown in Yala, Cross River State, where she was buried on Saturday.
“Immediately the body arrived, we dug a grave and buried her because she was too young to be kept for a customary burial ceremony,” Daniel said.
The incident was not reported to the police. The family maintained that the young woman took her own life and expressed dismay over the circumstances.
“We are at a loss as to why she should take such action over a boyfriend. Some people say she was spiritually manipulated, but whatever it was, no blame game will bring her back,” Daniel added.
