The South-West arm of the Peoples Democratic Party will spearhead efforts to remove President Bola Ahmed Tinubu from office in the 2027 general elections, according to a declaration by the Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement.

In a statement issued to the press, Alhaji Abass Olaniyi, South-West Coordinator of the movement, expressed firm backing for the recent stance taken by PDP leaders in the region, who distanced themselves from the endorsement of President Tinubu by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

According to Olaniyi, “The South-West PDP has shown clarity, courage, and commitment to the ideals of true opposition. This region will lead the charge to rescue Nigeria’s democracy and defeat President Tinubu in 2027, against the wish and personal interest of a select few.”

He noted that Wike’s public support for Tinubu was a personal decision that does not reflect the official position of the PDP, asserting that it stands at odds with the party’s core values and objectives.

Echoing this sentiment, PDP South-West spokesperson, Sanya Atofarati, earlier criticised Wike’s stance, stating: “Wike is not bigger than the PDP and cannot take unilateral decisions on its behalf. Leaders of the party in the South-West are united in their resolve to ensure Tinubu does not secure a second term and that PDP regains power in 2027.”

Alhaji Olaniyi further argued that for the PDP to regain its footing, it must realign with its founding principles. He pointed to Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim as a figure who embodies the ideological clarity and moral leadership required to chart a new course for the party.

“To defeat Tinubu in 2027, PDP must offer what APC doesn’t have. That’s integrity. That’s principle. And that’s Gbenga Hashim,” Olaniyi said.

He also claimed that internal efforts to take over the PDP for personal interests had failed, adding that the political atmosphere is now ripe for a values-based transformation. “Those seeking to exploit the party’s internal challenges for personal gain have failed. Nigerians want something new, something honest. The PDP must be that alternative,” he added.

The Gbenga Hashim Solidarity Movement, a multiparty platform with members drawn from the PDP, APC, Labour Party and others, says its mission is to rescue Nigeria from what it describes as exploitative and incompetent governance, and to promote visionary leadership capable of restoring the country’s founding ideals.

As preparations for the 2027 elections gain momentum, the group says it is actively mobilising across the South-West and other regions to strengthen the PDP’s position as a credible, united, and principled force capable of reviving the nation’s democracy.
