2027: North-Central group warns political parties against zoning exclusion

The North-Central Renaissance Movement has issued a stern warning to political parties, declaring that any party that refuses to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the North-Central region will face significant electoral consequences.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Chairman and Convener of the group, Professor K’tso Nghargbu, emphasised that the North-Central geopolitical zone—comprising Niger, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Nasarawa, Kwara States, and the Federal Capital Territory—has never produced an elected president or vice president since Nigeria’s independence, despite being a key contributor to national unity.

Nghargbu said: “It is our duty and responsibility to state clearly that the North Central geopolitical zone seeks, requests, and demands that political parties cede their presidential ticket to our region. Patronising us means having our votes. Despising us means losing our votes.”

He argued that the region is strategically positioned to bridge the deepening political divisions in the country, particularly the growing rift between political elites in the North and South.

Highlighting the calibre of leaders from the region, Nghargbu mentioned Dr. Gbenga Olawepo-Hashim, a prominent figure within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the FCT, who has already declared interest in contesting for the presidency. He added that other aspirants from the zone are encouraged to join the race.

“The North-Central is blessed with enormous political resources and human capital. We are capable of addressing Nigeria’s leadership challenges and driving unity at this critical time,” he said.

The NCRM also voiced strong support for the inclusion of independent candidacy in Nigeria’s constitution, describing it as a necessary step to break the monopoly of major political parties.

“Independent candidature is one of the answers Nigeria needs. It checks the excesses of political parties that deny genuine aspirants a chance,” Nghargbu added.

As the countdown to the 2027 general elections begins, the movement insists that zoning the presidency to the North-Central is not just a matter of equity but a strategic decision that could promote peace, unity, and national stability.
