There are growing concerns within the Coalition of United Political Parties following the sudden announcement of the Action Alliance withdrawing from the coalition.
In a statement issued on Wednesday morning, AA’s National Chairman, Kenneth Udeze, revealed that the decision to exit the CUPP came after consultations with the party’s stakeholders. Udeze expressed that the CUPP no longer aligns with the values and interests of the AA.
Despite this exit, the opposition party emphasized its commitment to promoting good governance and strengthening democracy through its continued participation in the Inter Party Advisory Council .
The CUPP, originally formed by a coalition of opposition parties led by the Peoples Democratic Party ahead of the 2019 general elections, was aimed at uniting opposition forces to challenge the All Progressives Congress.
However, Udeze criticized the current state of the CUPP, stating, “CUPP no longer represents our collective values due to lack of legal backing, internal organizational structure and leadership, above all the loss of its collective strength which was the case when the organization was formed prior to the 2019 general election.”
He continued, “Over time, we have observed and participated in discussions, meetings, and events that have led our party to question the CUPP direction and actions. Despite our efforts to contribute to positive change, by engaging in constructive criticism as opposition, we have come to believe that our differences are insurmountable.”
Udeze also acknowledged the opportunities the AA had to engage with like-minded individuals within the CUPP, who share the party’s commitment to democracy and good governance, but reiterated that the AA could no longer support an organization that no longer reflects their collective values.
