The Bauchi State Police Command has arrested a 20-year-old man, Safiyanu Dalhatu, for allegedly beating his mother, Salama Abdullahi, to death.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday.
He said the police received a report about the incident from members of the Peace and Security Committee in the Abujan Kwata area of Bauchi on February 24, 2025.
“At about 3 pm, Safiyanu Dalhatu, a 20-year-old male resident of Abujan Kwata, allegedly assaulted his biological mother, Salama Abdullahi, a 40-year-old female of the same residence,” Wakil said.
He explained that Dalhatu attacked his mother with a heavy pestle, breaking both of her hands and causing other injuries.
According to Wakil, the Divisional Police Officer, Abdullahi Muazu, led a team of detectives to the scene and rushed the victim to Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where doctors confirmed her death.
“Initial investigations suggest that the altercation between the suspect and his biological mother led to the assault,” Wakil added.
He said the police recovered the pestle used in the attack and have detained the suspect.
The Commissioner of Police, Auwal Muhammad, has ordered a thorough investigation by the State Criminal Investigation Department.
Wakil assured that once the investigation is completed, Dalhatu will be charged to court.
