2 dead, 77 injured in Ibadan explosion

In a tragic incident that unfolded on Tuesday night in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde revealed that the explosion which was caused by illegal mining activities in the state resulted in the death of two and injured 77 individuals.

The incident happened around 7:44 pm at Dejo Oyelese Street, Bodija, Ibadan.

Makinde in a statement disclosed “In total, we have 77 injured victims so far, most of whom were treated and discharged, and 2 fatalities. May their souls rest in peace, and may God give their loved ones the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

He also visited the site and hospitals treating the injured and shared the cause of the explosion stating, “Preliminary investigations by the security agencies revealed that illegal miners occupying one of the houses in Bodija had stored explosive devices there which caused the blast. The investigations are ongoing. All those found culpable for this will be brought to book.”

The governor expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident and outlined the immediate measures taken, saying, “We have already deployed first responders and all relevant agencies within Oyo State to carry out comprehensive search and rescue operations. These operations will continue throughout the night.”

The rescue efforts involved deploying essential resources to the scene, including earthmoving equipment, ambulances, emergency lights, and security personnel.

The wounded were promptly treated and transported to various public and private hospitals within Ibadan.

Addressing the financial burden on the victims, he assured, “I have directed that the medical bills of all victims be covered by the government.”

Additionally, temporary accommodation will be provided for those whose houses were affected, with support to help them rebuild their lives.

Urging residents to cooperate and stay away from the immediate scene, Makinde emphasized the importance of allowing rescue operations to proceed without interference.

He expressed gratitude to first responders, security personnel, and all involved in the rescue efforts and called for prayers, stating, “Please say a prayer for those who have been affected by this disaster as we continue with the rescue operations.”
