Seventeen people were killed in a mass shooting on Friday night in the town of Lusikisiki, located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa.

Police are now hunting for those responsible for the deadly attack.

According to a statement from South African police, 13 people, including 12 women and one man, were found shot dead in one house. In another location, four more people were killed. An 18th victim is currently in critical condition at a hospital.

“We do not know the motive, and we do not know if there is one or several suspects on the run,” said national police chief Fannie Masemola in an interview on SABC public television.

The tragic incident comes just weeks after another shooting in mid-September, where seven members of a family, including three children, were killed in their home in KwaZulu-Natal, also in eastern South Africa. The killers in that case have yet to be caught.

The police have launched a manhunt to find the culprits behind Friday’s shooting, but no further details have been provided.

The motive behind the attack is still unknown as investigations continue.
