A 16-years-old boy, Sulaiman Auwalu, was on Thursday confirmed dead in Kano State after he was rescued from a pond where he drowned while swimming.

The Kano State Fire Service spokesman, Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the sad incident to The PUNCH on Thursday, said the boy was swimming when he suddenly drowned in the process.

Following the tragedy, a Good Samaritan within the vicinity, Umar Abdullahi of Yankusa, in the Kumbotso Local Government Area of the state, hurriedly contacted the state firefighters at 2:01 pm to rescue the boy.

The firefighters, who arrived at the scene within 10 minutes following the distress call, immediately swung into action and successfully rescued the boy, who was already unconscious and rushed him to the Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where he was confirmed dead by doctors at the emergency ward.

It was gathered that the remains of the boy had been handed over to a police officer, simply known as, Bolts Sha’aibu of Panshekara Police Division.

However, the state fire service PRO, who attributed the cause of the incident to local swimming, called parents to constantly monitor the movement of their children and wards, even as he advised against embarking on swimming in a pond.
