A 10-year-old chess sensation from Yobe State, Mohammed Mubarak, is set to compete at the 2025 National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, making him the youngest athlete from the state to participate in the tournament.

Mubarak, who started playing chess at the age of 7, told reporters on Wednesday before leaving for Asaba that he is excited to showcase his skills at the national level after progressing through state and zonal elimination rounds.

“I started playing chess when I was 7, and I have been working hard to improve. I am happy to represent Yobe and I hope to make my state proud,” he said.

His coach, Chuxphoenix, expressed confidence in the young talent, saying Mubarak has shown remarkable skill and determination despite his age.

“With his passion for chess and determination to succeed, Mubarak is set to make a mark at the 2025 National Youth Games,” the coach said.

This will be Mubarak’s debut appearance on the national stage, where he will compete against other young chess players from across the country.

The 9th edition of the National Youth Games will take place from August 29 to September 6, 2025, in Asaba. Athletes from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory will compete in more than 37 sports, including athletics, football, basketball, and swimming, aimed at fostering unity and discipline among Nigerian youths through sports.
