Nollywood actress Ayo Adesanya has opened up about her painful experience in an abusive marriage, revealing that she endured a decade of physical and emotional torment.
Speaking in an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, Ayo disclosed that her former husband would beat her whenever he saw her, leaving her trapped in a toxic relationship for 10 years.
She shared that the abuse drove her to become an alcoholic as she struggled to cope with the pain.
“Anywhere my ex-husband saw me, he would beat me. He beat me so much, I became an alcoholic. But I couldn’t leave because of the shame that people would say I couldn’t keep a man,” she said.
The actress explained that despite the constant abuse, she stayed in the marriage due to societal pressure and fear of judgment. She recalled how some of her colleagues, including Bimbo Akintola, were upset with her for not walking away from the marriage sooner.
Ayo further revealed a terrifying incident when her ex-husband threatened to harm her with a knife and even sent their one-year-old son away to Ibadan out of jealousy over the attention she gave the child.
Reflecting on why her next relationship did not work out, Ayo admitted it was a difficult journey to rebuild her life and career after finally leaving her marriage.
Ayo Adesanya was previously married to Goriola Hassan, but the two have since divorced. The actress now focuses on her work in Nollywood and raising her son.
Her revelation adds to the growing list of actresses who have spoken about their failed marriages. Recently, veteran actress Jumoke George shared how she suffered maltreatment from her ex-husband, while actress Mama No Network revealed how her former husband, Baba Lanko, allegedly influenced movie producers not to feature her in the same films as him after their separation.
Similarly, Ronke Odusanya recounted how a friend falsely told her husband she was unfaithful, which led to the breakdown of her marriage. She said she left with only N10,000 in her account and had to stay with her brother.
Ayo Adesanya’s story has sparked conversations about the struggles many women face in abusive relationships and the courage it takes to walk away.
